Amethyst Information |
|
Amethyst is derived from the French word "peritot." Peritot means unclear probably due to the inclusions. This radiant green stone was found near volcanoes. Hawaiian legends called this gemstone the tears to the goddess of volcanoes, Pele. Amethysts have been the stone that helps heal and drives evil spirits away.

Amethyst has been mined as a gemstone for thousands of years in ancient Egypt on an island called Zeberget. The Romans called peridot "evening emerald," since its green color did not darken at night. It has a hardness of 6.5 on the Moh's scale. Today most peridot is mined in Arizona on the San Carlos Reservation, also mined in China and Sri Lanka. Although this stone has been treasured in Hawaii, almost all the peridot sold in Hawaii today is from Arizona, even though produced by Hawaii's volcanoes.

Amethyst's best color has an iron percentage of less than 15% and includes nickel and chromium as trace elements. A peridot gem always gets confused with an emerald gem. Although, peridot being more of a yellow than an olive color, it is absolutely the opposite green color from an emerald.

A Amethyst depends on its size, cut, color, and transparency. A cutter must put in all their attention and experience when cutting a sapphire, because this gemstone is not only hard, but they also show a different coloring satiation depending on the perspective. The most valuable blue sapphires are medium dark in tone, vivid blue to slightly violet blue hues.
