Sapphire is a gemstone that can be found in different types of colors; blues, pinks, and yellows. Ancient believed that the earth rested on a massive blue sapphire which reflected into the sky. A sapphire belongs to the corundum group which is set apart from other gemstones. The corundum group consists of aluminum oxide. Small proportions of other elements, mainly iron and chrome, are responsible for the resulting colors of a sapphire. Sapphires are found in Burma, India, Thailand, Australia, Africa, Brazil, Vietnam, and Ceylon. The oldest sapphire mines are Ceylon (Sri Lanka). However, most blue sapphires come from Australia or Thailand.
