  The history of Bulova started in 1875 when a 23-year-old immigrant from Bohemia opened a small jewelry store on Maiden Lane in New York City, this individual was Joseph Bulova.  In 1911 Bulova started manufacturing desk clocks and pocket watches which were sold in vast amounts. During World War I, wristwatches were issued to the military and when the veterans came home they brought the fashion with them and started the trend. Bulova already had enough factories and experienced in jewelry design, so they introduced the first line of men’s jeweled wristwatch in 1919. Then the first ladies wristwatches and first diamond wristwatches were introduced afterwards. America ran on Bulova time and began radios first commercials broadcast.

Bulova started its first million dollar advertising campaign in 1931 and even during the depression Bulova supported retailers by offering time-payment plans. Bulova aired its first TV commercial which was a simple picture of a clock and a map of the US and it was introduced at the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball game in 1941. Ardé Bulova, Joseph’s song started creating timepieces for the military. When the US entered WWII Bulova got right to work on their precision military equipment and created specialized timepieces, aircraft instruments and military watches. When the war ended the Joseph Bulova School of Watch-making allowed disabled veterans to feel self-sufficient.

  This school was supported by the Bulova Foundation. no financial aid was received by the government or students. Everything at the school was made so that disabled veterans/men were able to move around at no physical disadvantage. It was supplied with medical facilities included with recreation room made for treatment and relaxation. Any of the graduates were promised employment for there were over 1500 positions by American Jewelers.


Through constant research during the 1950’s Bulova developed their first electronic watch called the Accutron. It kept time within 2 seconds a day making a breakthrough of time keeping in over 300 years.

  Continuing on to the 1960s NASA asked Bulova to channel Accutron into making computers for the Space program. Bulova’s timer was placed on the moon. When this precision became obtainable to customers it was the first watch brand to offer a written guarantee of accuracy-in-use a minute in a month.

Bulova time pieces are official time on the air force one and have been used constantly used and awarded to important public figures as presidential gifts. Not only has it been given as presidential gifts but to the U.S. Olympic team.
