Luminox |
The Richard Barry Marketing Group was created by Richard Timbo and Barry Cohen. Richard and Barry were business acquaintances through their careers as sales representatives. Based on their prior sales experience, they started to create a strategic decision to seek out opportunities, which would include branded products or technology that would create a barrier to all from competition. They found a unique illumination technology produced by a Swiss manufacturer which suggests the technology be included into the line of Swiss watches, by doing so they negotiated an elite relationship for the use of the technology in North America, where the world's most luminous timepiece collection was created.
|
| Luminox means “light night” in Latin which was selected the excellent illumination system that the watch has. Initially they were marketed under the Swiss firms’ name RBMG but moved to create their own identity by obtaining the name Luminox with the shield icon included with the colors black, white and red. This logo includes the meaning by the use of the white lettering (light) on a black background, the black lettering (night) on a white background and the rest trim (representing the Swiss flag). |

Due to being unknown and attempting to enter a heavily brand driven market, sales were quite slow until Luminox was contacted by a procurement office for the U.S. Navy Seal team to build a dive watch that is good for uses on night missions. With the help of the Swiss firm, RBMG spend 9 months developing the Navy Seal dive watch which was launched in 1994. Due to being the supplier for the Seals this gave Luminox credibility that helped spur sales within the consumer area. Being successfully for selling hundreds of thousands of the original plastic model, Luminox’s second step was to create its first steel version of the seal dive watch which was launched in 1999. Once again this product became an instant best seller then suggested to RBMG “if we build, they will come”. So Luminox continued to expand the Seal dive watch story with the addition of an all steel series and all titanium line in the fall of 2000, again both selling successfully. |
|
| Then in 1999 Luminox received a call from Edwards Air Force base explaining they loved the watches but did not care for the watches made for the Navy and wanted Luminox to create watches specifically for them. The process of development for the U.S. Air Force to be worn by F-117 Nighthawk Stealth pilots, basically holding the same features as the Navy Seals it has had quite a good sell in the market place. |
